all-around awesome dude Dean Trippe's birthday is today! teh Myspace and LJ reminders let me know days earlier, but the forces aligned and I just so happen to have just finished up going over Dean's in-progress Batman sketch with ink. Actually, crappy microns and a sharpie. wanted to step outside meself and try inking someone else.

Hello of the Month

Dear LJ,

I have acquired the nerd equivalent of Batman's giant penny: After bugging the 7-Eleven guys ALL month for the Iron Man Slurpee Standee, I walk in and they let me have it! Finally! They were setting up Hulk crap for this month and it looked like they were about to chuck Iron Man in the garbage. But I walked in in the nick of time. He's like 7ft tall. A few minor dings, but he's cool.

I'm working on a new comic. I want it to be like, my calling card or whatever. It's going to be about a kitty cat fighting some bald vampire-looking creep with blades in his coat.

Dear blog:
Still working on my new story. given the speed of my output, i should be finished around 2012. give or take. my mummy-boy.com url is going to expire 5/30. I won't renew it cuz i'm moving on from that phase. It was a fun, yet expensive experience. Time to for a new story and a new way to get my work out thar.

new movies i saw:
cloverfield - pretty cool. glad all those yuppies died in the end.
Juno - loved it. better re-watch before returning it.
There Will be blood - haven't popped it in yet. i should get on that.

comics i still bother keeping up with anymore:
Batman & Detective - it's Batman. one written by Morrison, one by Dini. count me in.
daredevil - Been pretty glued to this one for the past 6 years or so.
captain america - 24 with superheroes. Cap died. Now it's Bourne with superheroes. a real twist fest.
buffy the vampire slayer - a comic was the only way to take Buffy further. it's awesome so far.
angel - with his story continuing in comics too it's been like effing x-mas this year.
ultimate spidey - SMLMJ went on a big fat hiatus, I loved it so much. and with Immonen on art this one gives me my spidey fix big time.

- Finished God of War 2. It rocked.
- Been collectin animated Justice League figures lately. I don't know what came over me, the hardcore-geek wants to come up for air again.
- Need to draw new cover for Mummy-Boy, and reprint it as the complete story like I meant to.
- Back to work on current pet project.

First of all, let me apologize for such a dreaded and impersonal thing as a form letter. However, we receive a great many submissions, and there is just no way I have time to respond personally to every submission. I do want to offer at least the courtesy of a response though—I know it must be a pain sending work out and not knowing if it was even received.

Since this is a form letter, after all, you can pretty much assume that I’ve read through your work and found, as the terrible cliché goes, that it doesn’t fit our needs. Either the artwork doesn’t quite have the level of detail, refinement, or originality that we’re looking for, or the content isn’t right for us. We are looking for detailed, original work that fully integrates artwork and plot in new and innovative ways; you may not be doing your generic—i.e. superhero / fantasy/ adventure / vigilante etc.—material (which we pretty much categorically dismiss), but art-wise or plot-wise it’s just not what we are looking for.

Don’t worry; the comics medium is a particularly hard art form to master, and an even harder one to break into. To master drawing as well as writing skills and integrate them into a syncretic whole is a daunting task that can take years to develop. Often the payoff is simply in terms of personal satisfaction. If you have that sense of satisfaction from your work already, consider yourself lucky. There are many, many others trying to get to that place.

Thanks for the interest, though, and I wish you the best of luck in your search for an appropriate publisher for your work.
